Get closer to your team

The start of 2011 was extremely difficult. Our 19 year old daughter was struggling with the news of an unplanned pregnancy and I was a mess.

At work, as a senior exec with a team to lead, I had to hold it together.

I put on a mask and not talking became the norm. When I eventually told my team, there was surprise and an outpouring of support. That felt so wonderful, but I could've benefited from that support months before, and I know they would have been so glad to give it.

Now Olly is 6 and a ray of sunshine, and our daughter is thriving.

I wish I could go back to 2011 and tell myself that!

We don’t know what’s going on in other people’s lives until we ask. We can’t help them find the support they need, we can’t celebrate their successes and help them work towards their goals. Build bridges with your team members by asking how you can help them achieve their personal goals for 2019. Ask them what’s going on in their lives, what they look forward to, what they have to cope with and to strive for.

These conversations will bring you closer in trust and understanding - important foundations of a great team. We’re all human, first and foremost.
