Calling all leaders - stop the complicated goal setting, just focus on these 3 questions!
I've seen so much in the past month about goal setting. And I get it, goals are incredibly important, it's almost like there is a complete industry that's been made out of how to set effective goals.
But so much of this is over complicated. I saw something the other day based on a 17 step goal setting process, and my heart sank. Who has the stamina and time for 17 steps? If you leading a team you don't need 17 steps.
I think there are just 3 things you need to focus on - and forget the rest.
- Are your team members focused on the right goals? Make sure there is ownership, accountability and metrics to match.
- Are these goals aligned across your team? Ensure no conflicts and an obvious connection to a higher, single goal which speaks to the whole team.
- Focus your attention on this question - 'how can I best serve my team to support them in delivering against their goals?' If you have done steps 1 and 2 well, this is your only goal that really matters for the remainder of the year.
That's it - for leaders it really is that simple.
In the midst of the noise, if you want to spread this message of simplicity please share this video.
