My Top Tip for Someone in a New Job

What's the most important thing to do when you're new in a role?

Surely it's to start shaking things up, isn't that what you were hired for?

We all know how it feels when we first start in a new job - especially in a new company.

We're excited, energetic, bouncy and full of anticipation of how we can shake things up and bring a new perspective to the company and our new team 🙂🙃🙂

There is a very real danger that this enthusiasm comes across as arrogance, over eagerness and even bombastic.

My top tip to everyone starting a new role is to slow things down and take the time to really listen to the people around you and across the organisation. Ask a lot of questions and then really listen to the answers. Listen not with the intent to respond but to understand.

This way you are much more likely to make good decisions when it comes to taking action and the people around you will appreciate you took the time to listen to them before leaping to your own conclusions.
