“What passes for breathing in our world is nothing more than a drive by relationship with air” Nancy Kline, author of Time to Think.
Do you know you can get a Masters Degree in Breathing? Maybe that’s not surprising when you consider how essential it is to our continued existence 😊
Because it’s a highly efficient, automatic response we're all good at maintaining a level of breathing to sustain our lives. But breathing well isn't easy and it's often the first thing to go when we're in stressful situations. If you're tensing up because you're nervous, stressed or anxious, check the quality of your breathing and try this exercise - it could be your life saver!
Sit in a comfortable chair with your feet on the floor, if you can't sit, lean against a wall for support.
Relax the muscles in your neck and shoulders.
Inhale slowly through your nose for 3 counts.
Feel your belly get larger as you breathe in.
Pucker your lips, as if you were going to blow out a candle.
Exhale slowly through your lips for 5 or more counts. Exhale normally.
Don't force the air out and don't hold your breath.
Repeat these steps until you feel yourself relaxing.
