We're all human, first and foremost

The start of 2012 was extremely difficult. Our 19 year old daughter was pregnant and struggling, and I was a mess.

As a senior executive with a team to lead, I had to hold it together.

I put on a mask.

The mask worked.

Not talking became the norm.

Eventually, a few weeks before Olly was born I surprised everyone at work with the news.

There was an outpouring of support.

And that felt so wonderful.

But I could've really benefited from that support months before and I know they would have been so glad to give it.

Now Olly is 6 years old (here he is opening his birthday present!) and he is our ray of sunshine.

And our daughter is thriving.

I wish I could go back to 2012 and tell myself that!

We don’t know what’s going on in other people’s lives until we ask. We can’t help them find the support they need, we can’t celebrate their successes and help them work towards their goals.

Make sure your planning for success in 2019 includes a space for the important personal goals of your team. Ask them what’s going on in their lives, what they want to achieve or look forward to, what they have to cope with and to strive for.

These conversations will bring you closer in trust and understanding - important foundations of a great team.

We’re all human, first and foremost.
